Continuing with the movie reviews. Not that I think anyone cares...
Lord of War
Score: 6.0
I don't know when it happened, but I started to get really annoyed with Nicholas Cage over the past few years. I liked him in Face Off and the Rock (<--one of the best action movies ever), and I didn't even mind him in Con Air, which is one of my guilty pleasures by the way. However, although I've been annoyed, I haven't minded his selection of film choices from time to time, and this is one of them. Not a bad flick at all. As expected from a film about gun trafficking, many parts of the film are unsettling, but the character studies of Nicholas Cage and Jared Leto's characters only accentuate the more uncomfortable parts of the film. But it achieved in a decent fashion what it set out to do, so I give it a very rentable 6.0.
Kicking and Screaming
Score: 4.0
Oh Will Ferrell. How I have defended thee over the past century. When Lorne Michaels and SNL made you the featured played on SNL I saw why. When you decided to leave SNL because it was a sinking ship with more holes than the 49er's offensive line (ka-dung-ching!) and pursue film work, I supported you wholeheartedly. But had I known you would have set out to do films such as Kicking and Screaming, I would rather have had you run back to join Tim Meadows and Chris Kattan in the annals of SNL hell. At times, decently funny but weighed down too heavily by the restrictions of being family comedy. It never really swings fully one way or the other. It is never gut bustingly hilarious, which it could have been with even a PG-13 rating and seeing Will Ferrell as a truly insane soccer coach. At the same time, it never reaches any truly touching levels for me to be satisfied with it being a cute family film. In the end, you will feel like you've wasted some time.
Van Helsing
Score: 2.0
Yes it is as bad as people have said it is. Yes, it is a complete waste of time and of Hugh Jackman. I was hoping, "vampires, werewolves, frankenstein...this should be fun!" After watching it, I was thinking, "vampires, werewolves, frankenstein...this is terrible." Really, it's not even worth checking it out to see how bad it is. It's not like so terrible it's funny bad. It's more of it's so terrible it's really terrible bad.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Score: 4.0
I never really understood the Resident Evil film franchise. They fail to capture the really creepy and trapped feeling of the videogames, but are never really entertaining on their own as action films. The movie isn't difficult to watch, but it's never really fun. They're making a 3rd one, did ya hear?
Serenity
Score: 5.0
You know there was a lot of hoopla for this one. Mostly everyone I knew who watched it said it was actually better than they thought it would be and that it was pretty good. The only problem is that because people started telling me this, I actually thought it was going to be pretty good when in fact, it was just "eh." Now had I actually gone into the movie with my original expectation that it was going to suck, I would enjoyed it a lot more. Darn people and their opinions. Special effects are shady, acting is slightly worse, and the storyline is the only part that is somewhat acceptable. And I never watched "Firefly," so I was bored with most of it.
Domino
Score: 3.0
Oh geez. Man...Man. Let me tell you about a time when I thought Keira Knightley was hot. It was when "Pirates" came out. She was slightly less hot than Natalie Portman but had a British accent. However, since then she's begun a steady decline of not-as-hotness, and "Domino" has currently dropped her out of my list altogether. Never once in the movie did I ever think she was attractive. Oh and the movie sucked too. Terrible attempt at being stylish and slick, but ended up being erratic and dizzying.
Till next time.
Oh and yes, I have finally seen Aeon Flux. Wait for that review.
If anyone cares.
